Churchill Chatter - Issue 14, March 24, 2025

Mrs. Wallace and students enjoy the student art show at the McLean Community Center.

Dear Churchill Road families,

This week we wrap up the third quarter.  Friday is a full school day, and the school will be closed on Monday, March 31 for the Eid-al Fitr holiday, and students will be off for the teacher workday on April 1.

As we come closer to Spring Break, we ask you to brainstorm with your child concerning ways to stay focused on their learning and show kindness to one another in our community.  Thank you for your support and help in this area.  Everyone is excited for Spring Break!

Next week, our 6th grade boys’ and girls’ teams will be playing against Spring Hill ES 6th graders at Langley High School.  It promises to be a fun event - we hope to see you there.

FCPS Superintendent Dr. Reid is continuing her community conversations.  Events are open to all. Share your thoughts and ask questions regarding FCPS on the following dates from 6:30-7:30 p.m.:

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr

Kids Heart Challenge!

Churchill has heart! For the 26th year, Churchill Road has again partnered with the American Heart Association to educate students about the cardiovascular system while providing information on keeping this essential body system healthy throughout life.  The American Heart Association launched the Kids Heart Challenge, formally known as Jump Rope for Heart.  Kids Heart Challenge is the same as Jump Rope for Heart, only now it aligns more with our Health and Physical Education curriculum.

This year we have set a goal of $12,000. Last year our students raised an amazing $27,280.40!!! Churchill Road was #2 in Fairfax County and in the top 20 for the state of Virginia!  It is just another example of how our families value living a healthy and active lifestyle along with the generosity to help a good cause. Our total fundraising over the past 26 years has been a whopping $418,878.12!!

Kids Heart Challenge fundraiser forms will go out in this week’s VIP folder.  Students who choose to participate in the fundraiser will have the opportunity to earn Thank You gifts from the American Heart Association while helping millions across the United States through the American Heart Association.  We are again going 100% online for donations this year, no physical money will be collected. The fundraiser will officially begin on Monday March 31 and end on Friday April 25, 2024.

Click the link below to sign up now!  Search “Churchill Road.” Thank you for your participation in this great event!  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mr. Varhol.

February 28 - March 28, 2025

Churchill Chatter - Issue 12, February 10, 2025

Show your Bobcat spirit this week!

Dear Churchill Road families,

The beginning of our third quarter has been a weather roller coaster.  We may be in for some more winter weather this week - stay tuned for any updates from FCPS.

Last Saturday, more than 350 members of the Langley Pyramid community came together to package 82,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger.  By working together, we made it possible for nearly 500,000 people to have a meal. We are so proud of your children for their work raising money to help children and families worldwide.

This past Friday, the PTA hosted a fun Bingo Night for more than 250 students and family members. Thank you to all who ensured this event was a success.

Looking ahead, we begin our second round of grade level parent  conversations (see article below).  Messages will be sent to each grade level via eNotify with details. Next Monday, February 17 is the Presidents Day holiday and school is closed.  The following Monday, February 24, is our next 3-hour early release Monday - dismissal at 12:20 p.m.

Don’t forget – if you would like to share insights for 2025-2026 class placements, please do so using the form linked in the article below. All information must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr

Parent Input for the 2025-2026 School Year

As we begin planning for the upcoming school year, our staff collaborates regarding student placements.  A variety of factors such as student personalities, friendships, and academic abilities are considered as we create our new classes.  Other factors impacting the decision-making process of student class assignments are new student enrollments and teachers moving to a new assignment.

Churchill Road families may assist in this process by sharing insights. Please note the following when providing information. We do not accept requests for specific teachers for the upcoming grade placement.  This includes hints that reference specific teachers.  We cannot guarantee friend requests nor exceptions for other students whereby there may be a conflict. We do our best to create a positive learning year for your child.

Please provide your input by submitting this form as it will ensure we have your request.  Please do not email us additional information. Completion of the form is optional: however, the deadline for any correspondence is February 26, 2025 at 4 PM. Thank you for your input.

Save the Dates! Spring 2025 SOL Testing

The Churchill Road SOL schedule for Spring 2025 has been finalized. Please see the chart above.  It is important that your child attend school on these days. If possible, please avoid scheduling trips or appointments that would take your child out of school during this time period. It is also important that your child has had a good night’s rest and a healthy breakfast before testing! We thank you, in advance.

Staying Healthy During Cold/Flu Season

Cases of RSV, the flu, and other viruses are high this year. It is important for students to wash their hands regularly and cover their coughs and sneezes. Please monitor your child’s health daily and keep them at home if they are sick. Visit FCPS' Health and Safety Guidance webpage for more tips.

MathCounts Competition

Congratulations to the Churchill Road MathCounts Team.  Churchill Road ranked fifth in the NOVA chapter, among 18 elementary and middle schools, and the second among all elementary schools.  Way to go team!

Character Strengths Focus

The next two weeks our school community is focusing on the character strengths of Love and OPM (Other People Mindset) - Cheering Others' Success.

Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.

Cheering Others' Success means when other people succeed, you are happy for them and cheer them on.

To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.

Family Liaison Newsletter - Issue 4, Feb 2025

Welcome to the February 2025 Family Liaison Newsletter!  February is a month for love and family.  Stay informed and engaged with our community updates on family resources, upcoming events and activites.

This Valentine's Day, let's explore what makes you YOU! Self-awareness helps students understand what they like, what they're good at, and what makes their hearts sing. Fun activities like sharing hobbies, talking about favorite school moments, or simply noticing what makes them smile can help build self-awareness.

Explore likes and dislikes through simple activities. Have your child circle pictures of activities they enjoy, such as playing with toys, helping in the kitchen, or drawing. Use a sticker chart to track activities your child tries and enjoys at home. Explore this activity that helps students connect and reflect on their interests and preferences.

It’s hard to believe this is the last week of school for 2024! Our band, strings and chorus students performed in their spirited winter concerts for families, and all are celebrating winter spirit week this week.  Second graders are heading to the Kennedy Center this week and all our students are looking forward to Friday’s winter parties!  We are so grateful to all the parents who have participated in these activities and volunteered for the winter celebrations.

Our staff is excited about Wednesday’s Secret Snowman event. We especially want to thank our incredible PTA, for their thoughtfulness and everyone's generosity during this time of year.

As a reminder, to ensure students take a well-deserved break, no homework will be assigned over winter break. Also, no assignments will be due immediately following the break.

We hope you and your family enjoy your time together, and we look forward to welcoming all of our students back in the new year. Classes will resume on Monday, January 6, 2025!

As always, thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children.  We do not take for granted the trust you have placed in us.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cherith Pierson-Barr

Character Strengths Focus

This week our school community is focusing on the character strength of Self Control.

Self-control means having the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act.

When we return from winter break, students will be focusing on Optimism.

Optimism means you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it.

To practice and encourage the character strengths with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions about these character strengths.
